AccountantsWorld has been around for a while. They are supposedly one of the pioneers of accounting in the cloud. They currenly only work with accounting professionals but their last survey seemed to imply they might be going straight to the consumer at some point.
I have been using the AccountantsWorld Payroll Relief service for almost two years. Below I’ll give a Payroll Relief review so you can judge for yourself whether it’s worth it or not. Send me questions if you have them and I’ll be glad to answer them.
Con: The design is very Web 1.0 – which basically means if you’re used to a nice looking application like many of the online accounting applications (eg Xero, Wave, Freshbooks or Harvest) you’ll notice that AccountantsWorld Payroll Relief looks like it was designed in 1999 and hasn’t changed since then. The design is completely unappealing so if you enable the client-facing features you’ll be negating the tech-savvy advantage because of the poor design quality.
Pro: There is a very secure log in and seams to be verified SSL by Go Daddy.
Con: They don’t automatically log you out if you leave your workstation which is a security issue they should fix.
Pro: Only $9.99 per client with less than 5 employees, HOWEVER, read the cons.
Con: They charge you $9.99 per month even if you don’t run a payroll for your client.
Con: They charge you $9.99 per month to restore a client that has been terminated. For instance, if you have a client that stops using your payroll service in March and comes back in December to run an end-of-year bonus payroll, you’ll have to pay $9.99 PER MONTH from March THROUGH December to restore the client. Hosting data in the cloud should be pennies, not more.
Con: They charge an annual fee of $190 just to sign up in addition to charging for every payroll.
Pro: The email customer is responsive.
Con: However, you can never respond to their support email – you have to log back in and put in a new request for every support request. This is extremely burdensome and I can’t think of another company that makes responding back to support so difficult.
Pro: They allow for electronic filings and payments.
Con: I have had issues with reports not making it to the IRS or state authorities. That’s a BIG issue, obviously, for a payroll software service.
Configuration and Payroll Processing
Con: Configuring everything is a pain and different features work on different browsers so you’ll need to toggle between at least two different browsers to be able to configure everything.
Con: It takes disruptive training to be able to learn how to configure a client.
Pro: Once everything is configured it’s relatively easy to run a payroll and file reports.
AccountantsWorld Payroll Relief has a long way to go to being a perfect payroll solution. I believe they only file in 30-something states so check with them before you start using them to make sure you clients’ states are covered. If you think I missed some Pros or Cons please let me know and I’ll take a look. If there is a better payroll software for accountants in the cloud please let me know so I can compare as it’s my goal to help online accountants better serve their clients.
